About Scouting and Troop 1 Champaign

About Boy Scouting
Scouting is a values-based program with its own code of conduct. The Scout Oath and Law help instill the values of good conduct, respect for others, and honesty. Scouts learn skills that will last a lifetime, including basic outdoor skills, first aid, citizenship skills, leadership skills, and how to get along with others. For almost a century, Scouting has instilled in young men the values and knowledge that they will need to become leaders in their communities and country. (from meritbadge.org)

Cub Scouts vs Boy Scouts

While Cub Scout packs are structured as a parent-son experience, Boy Scout troops have higher expectations of the scouts and put more responsibility on their shoulders: planning, packing, setting up camp, cooking, activities. In Scout troops, the scouts themselves have important leadership positions. And Scouts are themselves responsible for initiation of advancement. Often when a Scout struggles to accomplish a task he learns from his mistakes and becomes more confident. Boy Scouts is the start of the journey into young adulthood.

What New Scouts Learn

In their first year, new Scouts learn the traditional scout skills of camping (setting up camp, building a fire, handling an axe and knife, outdoor cooking and menu planning, hiking), first aid, a few useful knots. Most Scouts attend Scout summer camp for a week each summer, it's a great way to do some camping and learning, and it's a blast! New Scouts learn to be good followers and do their part in their patrol. There will also be opportunities for community service, and fundraisers for troop activities. Both youth leaders and adult leaders will be there to help new Scouts along the way!

What Experienced Scouts Learn

More experienced Scouts continue to hone their outdoor skills, and participate in service projects, but they will increasingly be expected to develop their leadership skills -- assist in teaching other Scouts, assume leadership positions in planning and organizing activities.
